Puzzling wind properties of young massive stars in SMC-N81

چکیده
We present a quantitative study of massive stars in the High Excitation Blob N81, a compact star forming region in the SMC. The stellar content was resolved by HST and STIS was used to obtain medium resolution spectra. The qualitative analysis of the stellar properties presented in Heydari-Malayeri et al. (2002a) is extended using non-LTE spherically extended atmosphere models including line-blanketing computed with the code CMFGEN (Hillier & Miller 1998), and the wind properties are investigated. The main results are the

STIS spectroscopy of newborn massive stars in SMC N 81 ⋆
Using Hubble Space Telescope observations with STIS, we study the main exciting stars of N81, a high excitation compact H ii region in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These far UV observations are the first spectroscopic measurements of stars in such a region and reveal features characteristic of an O6–O8 stellar type. The astonishing weakness of their wind profiles and their sub-luminosity (...

We present near infrared JHK imaging of the Small Magellanic Cloud compact H ii region N81 using the ISAAC camera at the ESO Very Large Telescope (Antu). Our analysis of the stellar environment of this young massive star region reveals the presence of three new stellar populations in the surrounding field which are mainly composed of low mass stars. The main population is best fitted by evoluti...
متن کاملMassive Stars in the Smc
In this paper we discuss how the Small Magellanic Cloud is the ideal laboratory in which to study massive stars in a low metallcity environment. We review the observational data for OB stars in the SMC concentrating on those aspects of their spectra which provide information on processes which may strongly influence their evolution, namely mass-loss, rotational mixing and mass-transfer. We illu...
متن کاملX-Ray Plasma Diagnostics of Stellar Winds in Very Young Massive Stars
High resolution X-ray spectra of very young massive stars opened a new chapter in the diagnostics and understanding of the properties of stellar wind plasmas. Observations of several very young early type stars in the Orion Trapezium demonstrated that the conventional model of shock heated plasmas in stellar winds is not sufficient to explain the observed X-ray spectra. Detailed X-ray line diag...
متن کاملVery young massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud, revealed by HST
High spatial resolution imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope allowed us to resolve the compact H ii region N 81 lying in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We show the presence of a tight cluster of newborn massive stars embedded in this nebular “blob” of ∼ 10′′across. This is the first time the stellar content and internal morphology of such an object is uncovered. These are among the younge...
